Liver Transplant

Jeysebel from Mozambique with bleak chances of survival visits India with a ray of hope.

Completely unaware of the severity of the problem, 14 years old Jeysebel accompanied by her mother Ms. Virginia arrived in New Delhi on the 18th of August, 2014. They hail from Maputo, Mozambique.

Wings Medical Tourism immediately took her to PSRI hospital for check–up and after consulting Dr. Dinesh Singhal we admitted her there for investigations. The reports revealed severe damage to her liver and needed immediate liver transplant. It was suggested that we take her to another hospital for the transplant and after consulting our panel of doctors we made quick arrangements to transfer her to Apollo Hospital. The transplant was to be done by Dr Subash Gupta a very well known and a highly experienced doctor.

The situation was grim, her health condition was very delicate. Amidst the anxiousness of the family, Jeysebel was admitted to Apollo Hospital on the 21st of August, 2014. There was a need for a donor whose liver had to be compatible to that of the receiver. Jeysebel's mother, Ms. Virginia agreed to donate her liver. And then a complication came up, Ms. Virginia was three months pregnant and she couldn’t donate her liver in any circumstances whatsoever. The doctor advised that Jeysebel should get her liver transplant done by mid next week otherwise the situation can deteriorate even further leading to irreversible coma.

Apart from medical complications the patient had come to India on a tourist visa, without any legal documents.
We took the matter head on and planned as follows:

  1. Jeysebel's tourist visa was to be converted to medical visa from FRRO office. This usually takes 8-10 days to process.
  2. We needed a blood relative as a donor from Mozambique whose compatibility had to be matched and booked on flight to India to reach here by Sunday.
  3. We required legal documents, affidavits from her family and the donor & the donor's family duly attested by the authorities at Mozambique.
  4. All documents were to be attested by the Mozambique High Commission/Embassy in India
  5. The complete file was to be presented to the Delhi State Health Department for approval of transplant by Monday afternoon, so as to proceed with the operation on Monday night/Tuesday morning.

We prioritized the steps and took actions for the best results. We contacted Ms Virginia’s brother (prospective donor- Mr. Helder) & asked him to undergo specific tests for compatibility and send us scanned report by Friday. We got the reports and fortunately compatibility tests were successful.
Meanwhile we had already sent an invite letter to Indian High Commission for the donor's medical visa even though we were not sure of his compatibility reports. We went ahead to save time as next two days were a weekend and the High Commission would remain closed. Due to this smart work, Mr. Helder got the visa on Friday itself. We immediately arranged for his air ticket from Maputo scheduled to arrive India on Sunday morning.

We called FRRO office and explained the situation and were assured to come on following Monday to apply for conversion of the patient's visa.
Dr Subash Gupta’s office staff arranged all necessary medical documents and we got them attested on Sunday evening with a special request to the Mozambique High Commission explaining the severity of the case. All the formalities were completed meticulously and we were all set –

  • We had a donor
  • The file was ready
  • Visa’s were converted in flat two hours by noon on Monday
  • The case was put up for the committee’s approval
  • Eventually permission was granted

De Figueiredo Jeysebel Jose Sousa was operated on the 26th of August, 2014 at Apollo Hospital and was discharged on the 9th of September, 2014. She has fully recovered and is healthy now. The donor is fine too and back to work in his home town.

Jeysebel was back.

Kidney Failure

Titos Smauel Languene

Mr. Titos Samuel Languene from Maputo-Mozambique was suffering from a critical renal kidney failure. So much so that he was on dialysis thrice a week. He really wanted to get rid of this illness and thought of undergoing medical treatment in India. He came across Wings Medical Tourism and got in touch with us. As soon as the request came we initiated action without delay.

The priority was set and we took the following actions:

  • Wings Medical Tourism, asked for his reports and current medical status that included list of medication & treatment he was undergoing.
  • We immediately got in touch with our doctors for the initial consultation. The case was referred to Dr. Sandeep Guleria, a very renowned kidney/renal transplant surgeon at Apollo Hospitals.
  • Next we arranged and sent legal documents’ requirements to Mr. Titos along with invitation letter for the issuance of medical visa.
  • The approximate cost was also sent across to Mr. Titos that included
    1. Estimate of surgery.
    2. Stay in Hospital.
    3. Stay in Guest House.
    4. Cost of Medication etc.
  • The donor’s invitation letter was sent and all legal formalities pertaining to the donor and recipient were completed within no time.
The Arrival

Mr. Titos arrived in India with his sister Ms. Marta as the donor and his elder sister Lucerecia as assistant. We received them at the airport and they were straightaway taken to Apollo Hospitals. Mr. Titos was immediately admitted and the preparation for surgery was kick started. After the mandatory investigations within 10 days he was successfully operated and continued to stay in Delhi for another 30 days in a nearby comfortable and economical guest house for follow-ups with the doctor until he was fit to return to Maputo.

With the efforts of Wings Medical Tourism, the doctors and above all God’s grace he is absolutely fine and has recovered. We wish him a healthy and a peaceful life.
